During Phase 3 of the project, a protocol document was created that guided the way in which lecturers and students worked together to use the assessment rubrics (and instructions) they had co-constructed during the previous phase of the study. The following table outlines the main processes employed by the students and lecturers to use the rubrics. The PDF documents provided throughout the instructions below include the protocol document and data collection instruments that were used throughout this phase of the project. For replication of these research processes, other researchers should feel free to modify these documents to suit their own contexts.

STEPS to USE of CO-CONSTRUCTED RUBRICS PURPOSE SUPPORT DOCUMENTS
& DATA COLLECTION INSTRUMENTS
Step 1: To develop data collection instruments and
recruit participants to track the progress of using co-constructed rubrics
Develop data collection instruments to administer after the co-constructed rubrics have been used To answer the “use” aspect of Research Question 2: How can students and teachers co-construct and plan the collaborative use of rubrics for students learning?

Recruit pilot group (about 5 lecturers and 5 students) To test the data collection instruments and make any adjustments deemed necessary.
See four data collection instruments above
Re-establish contact with project participants (lecturers and students) To inform participants of project and for record keeping and tracking. See the Full co-construction protocol document for Phase 3
Establish data collection times and dates To assist the lecturer and ensure the lecturer is conversant with process. See the Full co-construction protocol document for Phase 3
Step 2: Guidance on use of co-constructed rubrics and administration of data collection instruments
Meetings between lecturers and researchers

Clarification of use of co-constructed rubrics and data collection process.
Researchers establish a data collection schedule, in conjunction with lecturers.

Step 3: Use of rubrics and data collection

Session  1

Lecturers remind students about the rubrics they co-constructed in previous phase. Rubrics are introduced early in the semester, along with any other documents created by the students and lecturers during the co-construction phase.

[no data collection instruments required at the beginning of this process]

Session 2

Continue rubric use throughout semester

Session 3

Administer data collection instruments after co-constructed rubrics have been used (Questionnaire for Students and Lecturers, Focus group with Students, Interviews with Lecturers).
Offer certificate of participation to student-participants.
